2018 has so far been a good time for Pop-Punk. At the beginning of the year, Waterparks released their highly-anticipated ‘Entertainment‘ album, As It Is and With Confidence both have new albums coming out this summer and All Time Low have released their stellar new track Everything Is Fine. As if this wasn’t enough, State Champs has just blessed us with their new album: Living Proof.
And their new album truly is a blessing. You can hear the influences of co-writers and Pop-Punk Kings Alex Gaskarth from All Time Low and Blink 182’s Mark Hoppus, without the songs becoming an imitation of those bands. Mark Hoppus even features on second to last track Time Machine, which is a slower song with an excellent piano-like synth intro.
The ballad-like quality of ‘Time Machine‘ proves to be a nice breather from all the upbeat Pop-Punk bangers, because believe me, this album is absolutely packed with energising Pop-Punk tunes. The guitar at the beginning of Frozen alone is enough to make me want to jump up and down in my All-Stars. Whilst the first lines of the chorus in ‘Safe Haven‘, “They said we could find safe haven,
but I think it’s wherever we are”, may be a bit cheesy, it makes up for it with just how catchy it is!
The vocals in the chorus of ‘Dead and Gone‘ , I simply didn’t dig as much. Derek DiScanio’s half-shouted half-sang voice didn’t do it for me on this track. That said, it has already grown on me a bit after several listens though and the rest of the track is still great.
My personal highlight on the album has to be ‘Our Time To Go‘, a track that is so memorable that I have woken up with it playing in my head for three days in a row! Plus, the band released a video for it in which a guy falls in love with a purple alien girl and teaches her to eat Oreo’s and pizza.
No if that isn’t Pop-Punk, then I don’t know what is anymore!
Living Proof is a great addition to what is proving to be an amazing year for Pop-Punk. It shows State Champs are deserving of a place among the Pop Punk legends that they are influenced by.
And I can’t wait to hear what they’ll do next.
‘Living Proof‘ is out now via Pure Noise Records.
