As with all big events, everyone remembers where they were when they heard the news that Princess Diana had died. It shook the country for a long time afterwards, leading to a sense of national mourning. Elton John, a close friend of Diana’s, gave the country something to sing during the confusing time, rereleasing his 1974 hit ‘Candle In The Wind‘ as a charity single with new lyrics and performing it at the funeral.
Today marks 21 years since the first day the song reached No. 1 on the UK charts, and it would remain comfortably at the top for five weeks. Not only that, but the song also became the best selling song in the UK, taking the record held for 13 years by Band Aid for ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?‘. And in case that wasn’t enough, Guinness World Records consider it the highest selling single since charts began in the 1950s.
Both versions of the song are incredible, but for now let’s chill out and get a little bit emotional over the 1997 release.
