I remember the first time I ever saw and heard IDLES. It wasn’t the best of first impressions to say the least. Why was there so much hype around this band who seemed to have very little in the way of substance and were fronted by Trevor Phillips?
If you don’t get the reference, you’ve obviously not played GTA V. Go and google the name, it’s quite uncanny!
However, first impressions should never be the end, unless it’s a Justin Bieber release (no, I don’t care how many people said his last album was a belter, I stand by my opinion that it’s very well produced s**t) and after a while, I decided it was time to give these Punks from Bristol another go through the Hi-Fi. I put ‘Joy As An Act Of Resistance‘ on and became a convert.
So, if these chaps have passed you by or you’re still not convinced, then allow us to bring you ‘Never Fight A Man With A Perm’, the latest single from the aforementioned album. It’s hefty, hard hitting and unexpectedly introspective in it’s lyrics, looking back into the self admitted darker times in the past of frontman Joe Talbot.
Plus the title in itself is pretty sound advice. Apparently a perm is like a video game power up that gives you ultimate power, which would explain Kevin Keegan now we come to think of it…
